Studying abroad is an exciting and transformative experience, but it can also come with challenges related to health and well-being. At John Cabot University in Italy, we prioritize the safety and wellness of our students. Here are five key resources that JCU offers to support the health and well-being of our study-abroad students.

1. Health Services for Study Abroad Students

John Cabot University provides comprehensive health services to ensure students can access medical care when needed. Starting from the first week of classes, an English-speaking campus doctor is available for in-person consultations three times a week. For medical needs outside of the doctor's office hours, an English-speaking on-call doctor is also accessible.

Dr. Andrea Guerriero, a general practitioner, offers same-day 24/7 house calls to JCU students, providing free consultations via phone, text message, or WhatsApp. This extensive support network ensures students receive timely medical attention on campus or at their residences.

2. The CISI Plan Provides Peace of Mind

Italian law mandates that all non-Italian students have medical insurance. JCU collaborates with Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI) to provide high-quality health insurance that meets immigration requirements. The CISI plan offers extensive coverage, including mental health services, emergency repatriation, and specialist visits.

This plan ensures that students are protected and can access necessary medical care without worrying about financial burdens. European students with EHIC cards are encouraged to purchase private health insurance due to potential limitations and language barriers in the Italian healthcare system.

3. Protecting Students From Discrimination, Harassment, and Assault at JCU

John Cabot University is committed to creating a safe and inclusive environment for all students. The university has a zero-tolerance policy towards discrimination and harassment based on race, color, ethnic or national origin, religion, sex, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, marital or parental status, or disability.

JCU provides resources for students to report any incidents of discrimination or harassment, including the option to file formal complaints with the Dean of Students Office and the Director of Health and Wellbeing. Our university in Italy also cooperates with local law enforcement if necessary.

4. Championing Mental Health Through Counseling Services

Adjusting to a new culture and environment can be challenging. The JCU Counseling and Mental Health Center offers short-term individual counseling sessions in English and Italian, available in person or remotely. Our team of counselors is equipped to handle a range of issues, including stress, anxiety, depression, relationship problems, and culture shock.

Additionally, our psychiatrist is available for evaluations, medication management, and follow-up appointments. These services are covered by tuition and are a vital part of the JCU experience, helping students maintain their mental health and overall well-being.

5. Safeguarding Our Students

John Cabot University takes the safety of its students very seriously. The university has a 24/7 emergency phone number. It regularly updates students on health and safety alerts through various communication channels, including social media, the university website, and the International SOS Emergency messaging system.

Students are encouraged to enroll in the Safe Travelers Program through their home country’s embassy and stay informed about current safety measures and emergency protocols. Additionally, the university provides guidelines on how to keep safe in Rome and what to do in an emergency.

John Cabot University is committed to the health and well-being of its study-abroad students. By offering comprehensive health services, reliable health insurance, support for issues of discrimination and harassment, counseling and mental health services, and timely safety and health alerts, JCU ensures that students can focus on their academic and personal growth without health-related worries. If you are considering studying abroad at JCU, rest assured that your well-being is our top priority.
