Summer in Rome: What to Expect and How to Make the Most of It as a John Cabot University Student

July 3, 2025

Thinking of spending your summer studying in Rome? It is one of the most exciting times to experience Italy’s Eternal City - where ancient history meets modern academic life. At John Cabot University, you'll discover Rome as a cultural immersion and a living classroom.

Whether you’re enrolled in a summer session or taking undergraduate courses toward your degree, here's what to expect during summer in Rome and how to make the most of your time at JCU.

What Is Rome Like in the Summer?

1. Warm Weather! Perfect for Exploring (and Hydrating)
Summer in Rome is hot. Expect sunny skies and temperatures around 30–35°C (85–95°F). It’s ideal weather for outdoor sightseeing and exploration, but you’ll want to stay cool - what to bring:

  • A reusable water bottle (Rome’s nasoni, or public fountains, offer clean drinking water)
  • Lightweight, breathable clothing
  • Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat

JCU Tip: Our air-conditioned classrooms, libraries, and student lounges provide a comfortable and productive space to study.

2. Rome's Cultural Events as Curriculum Extensions
July brings Rome to life with open-air concerts, exhibitions, film festivals, and evening museum openings. As a JCU student, these cultural experiences often become part of your academic journey.

With over 100 courses offered in the summer, JCU's faculty integrate Rome into class assignments in key areas such as:

  • Art History
  • Italian Language and Culture
  • Art and Design
  • History
  • Media Studies
  • Classical Studies
  • Communications

JCU Tip: Take advantage of professor-led site visits and class trips around Rome. Many JCU courses are held outside the traditional classroom, with lectures taking place in museums, archaeological sites, and historic piazzas.

How JCU Students Spend Summer in Rome

You’ll find that summer at JCU is a balanced mix of academics, cultural immersion, and independent exploration.
Morning: Head to class at one of our campuses in the Trastevere neighborhood, with small class sizes and international faculty.
Afternoon: Grab a pizza or a panino (sandwich) with classmates at JCU's Tiber Café (our cafeteria), then study in the Frohring Library to collaborate with peers.
Evening: Join a JCU-led cultural activity, attend a guest lecture, explore local neighborhoods like Testaccio and Monti, or grab a gelato and catch a sunset from the Gianicolo hill.

JCU Tip: Take advantage of JCU’s Internship programs through the Center for Career Services to gain real-world experience while living in Rome. Whether you're assisting at a local nonprofit or interning with an art gallery, these opportunities let you build your resume and immerse yourself in Roman culture beyond the classroom.

Weekend Escapes from Rome

Another benefit of summer at JCU? Having the advantage of Rome's central location within Europe, making short weekend trips very accessible. In the summer, many students choose to explore:

  • Florence - Explore Renaissance art, history, and architecture
  • Venice - Ride a vaporetto, visit St. Mark’s Basilica, and explore canals and contemporary art.
  • Naples and the Amalfi Coast – Visit Pompeii, enjoy Southern Italian cuisine, and relax on the coast.
  • Be sure to check out JCU Activates and Trips organized by our Student Life team - explore everything from day trips outside of the city to cooking classes, excursions, and more!

JCU Tip: Take advantage of no classes on Fridays! Many summer courses at JCU are held Monday through Thursday, giving you long weekends to explore Italy and beyond. Use the extra day to travel for a 3-day weekend, or enjoy a slower-paced Roman weekend.
