Studying abroad in Italy is a chance to experience breathtaking landscapes, incredible history, and a vibrant cultural life, making it a dream for many students. But along with that dream often comes the worry of how to afford it all.

The good news is that studying abroad doesn’t have to be out of reach financially. At John Cabot University, we understand the challenges of managing expenses while living in a new country.

With some planning and smart budgeting, you can maximize your study abroad experience without breaking the bank. This blog post explores practical tips to help you realize your dream of studying abroad in Italy.

Plan for Tuition and Educational Costs

Before anything else, you should start by understanding the cost of tuition and other fees. Tuition, a meal plan, a permit to stay, and health insurance are key expenses you'll incur as a JCU student. Although tuition fees at JCU might seem steep, it’s comparable to tuition at public out-of-state universities—and you’ll be studying in the heart of Rome at a private institution.

One way to reduce costs if you're planning to study abroad in Italy is to explore scholarship opportunities. Many study abroad scholarships, both internal and external, are available to help offset your expenses. Applying for financial aid and researching scholarship programs early is key to reducing the burden of these costs.

Take Advantage of Affordable Student Housing

Living expenses are a significant part of studying abroad. The good news is that Rome’s cost of living is relatively affordable compared to other major cities like New York or London.

Staying in JCU’s Gianicolo Residence or Lungara Apartments can significantly reduce your expenses. University housing also means you’ll be within walking distance of your classes, eliminating transportation costs and ensuring a comfortable, secure living environment.

Use Free and Discounted Resources When You Study Abroad in Italy

Rome is a city brimming with history, art, and culture, and the best part is that many of these experiences are available at little to no cost. As a student, you can access various discounts at museums, galleries, and other attractions. Simply showing your student ID can get you reduced or even free entry to many of the city’s most iconic sites.

To stretch your budget even further, look into local festivals and events. Rome often hosts free cultural activities, from concerts to street fairs. Additionally, certain websites can offer deals on dining and activities, allowing you to experience the city while keeping costs low.

Cook Your Meals

Rome’s culinary scene is undeniably tempting, but eating out too often quickly exceeds your budget. A great way to save money while you study abroad in Rome is by preparing meals.

Buy fresh ingredients at local markets and grocery stores and use the kitchenettes in your JCU housing. Cooking most of your meals at home helps save you money while also giving you a taste of authentic Italian living.

To strike a balance, consider eating out occasionally—perhaps limiting it to weekends or special occasions, just as alumna Chrissy Saloman suggests. “My tip is to try and eat breakfast and lunch in your JCU housing and then eat dinner out on the weekdays. This helped me save a little bit more money only paying for 1 meal a day instead of 3,” she states. You can also explore affordable dining options, such as the Tiber Café at JCU, where meal plans are available at reasonable rates.

Use Public Transportation and Walk Whenever Possible

Rome’s public transportation system is both affordable and efficient. Students can purchase monthly or weekly transit passes with unlimited bus and metro rides. Consider using the city’s pay-per-use bikes or scooters for shorter distances, an eco-friendly and budget-conscious alternative to taxis or Uber.

Rome is also a highly walkable city, with many landmarks and attractions near JCU’s campus. Walking saves money and allows you to discover hidden gems around the city while taking in its rich history.
