Attending John Cabot University in Rome provides academic excellence and access to a vibrant community engagement and service hub. Prospective students interested in philanthropy will find numerous opportunities to give back to the local community.

Here are five impactful ways JCU students can get involved in community service, drawing from recent initiatives and achievements.

1. Participate in Environmental Cleanups

One of the standout ways JCU students contribute to the community is through environmental cleanups. Led by the Grassroots Club, students have actively cleaned up areas around Trastevere and Villa Pamphili. For instance, in the spring of 2024, JCU volunteers collected 66 kilograms of trash, significantly impacting the local environment.

These cleanups foster a sense of environmental stewardship and responsibility among students. By participating, students can help preserve Rome's beauty while connecting with like-minded peers.

2. Support Local Refugees and the Homeless

JCU students have shown tremendous dedication to supporting local refugees and the homeless community in Rome. Through various initiatives, they have packaged and delivered over 2500 meals to guests of Vo.Re.Co., a local organization aiding the homeless. This effort is supported by the Tiber Cafeteria and funded by STAND, a student organization dedicated to community service.

Additionally, JCU students volunteer at the Joel Nafuma Refugee Center, where they help support refugees' integration and well-being. This hands-on experience allows students to understand the challenges faced by vulnerable populations and contribute meaningfully to their support.

3. Engage in Educational Outreach

Many students volunteer their time to assist in educational programs for local schools and community centers. For example, students have participated in English conversation sessions at Casa Internazionale delle Donne, helping non-native speakers improve their language skills.

They have also engaged with middle school students from I.C. Via Fabiola in the “Bevo? Anche No!” project, promoting healthy lifestyle choices. These initiatives provide JCU students with valuable teaching and mentorship experience.

Lily Serber, who participated in Italy Reads, a mentorship program for Italian high school students, recalls her experience volunteering in educational outreach: “Volunteering abroad has many benefits, and I have met many great people while learning about different cultures and new perspectives. In addition, through volunteering abroad, I found a community I enjoy surrounding myself with. I have found a sense of community at John Cabot by being a part of Italy Reads and the Community Service program, and it has been so lovely meeting new people from around the world. This experiential learning and being able to volunteer in another country is something that I will always remember.”

4. Join Social Justice and Civic Engagement Projects

JCU’s commitment to social justice is evident in various civic engagement projects. One notable project is the collaboration with the Vote from Abroad Italy team, where students help register other students to vote. This initiative is crucial for encouraging democratic participation among the student body, particularly for those studying abroad.

Furthermore, students attending our university in Rome have volunteered with Centro Italiano di Solidarietà, engaging in activities that support social inclusion and community building. These projects allow students to understand social justice issues.

5. Contribute to Local Food Security Initiatives

JCU students actively contribute to food security through initiatives like the STRAVA challenge, which donated €250 worth of goods to Vo.Re.Co, and breakfast distributions with TuttoBlue Arte e Sociale. These efforts, along with over 1100 hours of community service in 14 weeks, showcase the university's commitment to fostering a culture of civic engagement.

Students can earn a Community Service Certificate by volunteering 15 hours per semester, participating in related educational experiences, enhancing their international resumes, and demonstrating dedication to impactful service.
