It’s no secret that today’s world is heavily globalized, with internationalization impacting various aspects of our lives—from tourism and communication to politics and corporate activities. With this reality in mind, a background in international relations comes in handy, giving you the necessary insight to navigate complex relationships in a highly interconnected world.

Students interested in exploring this field can consider joining John Cabot University’s International Relations Society. International relations is typically viewed as the area of study that focuses on relationships between different nations and international organizations, including sub-national entities like political parties and bureaucracies. Joining a club with this focus allows you to develop a global perspective—one that you can use to broaden your future prospects.

Here’s a closer look at what JCU’s International Relations Society is all about for those interested in learning more!

Meet the International Relations Society of JCU

First established in 2014, the International Relations Society at John Cabot University represents a group of like-minded students who enjoy discussing politics and examining world events through academic discussions as well as informal conversations. Members have the opportunity to share their own thought processes and worldview, learning from each other in a friendly and open environment.

As the Society is based at an American university in Rome, it directly benefits from the school’s diverse and multicultural student body—inviting members of the JCU community to participate in events and activities. Topics discussed may be controversial or complex, but they provide students with the chance to self-reflect and discover the world around them through a new lens. This exposure can complement your studies and broaden your skillset, whether or not you’re earning a degree in international relations.

How the Society’s Activities Increase Community Engagement

The International Relations Society is actively involved in the JCU community, organizing conversations about current events with guest speakers. This promotes an exchange of ideas, encouraging open dialogue and engagement.

Members also participate and help with the “Pizza and Politics” Project, organized by Professor Driessen - the chair of Political Science and International Affairs at John Cabot University. In this space, students and faculty come together to discuss global politics and contemporary events while enjoying a snack.

Being involved in these events allows students to develop key analytical and critical thinking skills while improving their communication and teamwork skills. That’s because these discussions give students the chance to distill complex ideas into clear and shareable messages. In this way, becoming a member helps you become a great team player, cooperating with others to encourage meaningful dialogue.

Network with Experts to Gain First-Hand Experiences

Members of the International Relations Society also invite experts, including ambassadors, politicians, and scholars to interact with the JCU community. Having access to experienced professionals and academics can prove invaluable for those seeking to expand their network in the field of international relations.

In addition to these networking opportunities, members can travel as a group to visit different international courts and institutions in Europe. This allows you to immerse yourself in high-level professional settings and gain first-hand experiences in new cultures.

For example, with the help of JCU’s Center for Career Services, Madison Silverman, a senior double majoring in International Affairs and Art History, had the opportunity to intern at the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics and Human Rights. As she described, the experience allowed her to “expand [her] skill set, and work with incredibly bright, caring, and friendly colleagues.”

By working hard and expanding your knowledge of international relations, you can be better prepared to start an exciting internship and launch your career in the field!
