Protecting Your Mental Health While Studying Abroad

The opportunity to study abroad offers an exciting journey, but adjusting to a new country and culture can feel overwhelming. It’s important to prioritize your mental health during this transition, alongside academic success. We recognize John Cabot University's challenges and offer student support. If you feel anxious or struggle to adapt, remember that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

In this blog, we’ll explore the common challenges students face when they study abroad and how to seek the support needed to thrive.

Understanding the Challenges of Studying Abroad

Moving to a new country can bring unexpected stressors. The pressure to adapt to a new culture, form new friendships, and succeed academically can be intense. Many students also experience culture shock, which can manifest in homesickness, confusion, or loneliness. Balancing studies with daily life abroad can be daunting, as academic pressure, language barriers, and making connections may impact your mental health.

John Cabot University’s Counseling and Mental Health Center is designed to help students navigate these challenges. You don't have to face it alone, whether struggling with the transition or personal issues like relationship difficulties or isolation. Seeking early support can make all the difference in managing your emotional well-being when studying abroad in Italy.

When to Consider Seeking Support

Some common signs that you may benefit from counseling or other forms of support include:

  • Persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety, or hopelessness: If you've been feeling down or anxious for weeks and it’s affecting your focus or enjoyment of life, it may be time to seek help.
  • Difficulty adjusting to your new environment: If you're struggling with culture shock, making friends, or feeling disconnected, a counselor can offer a safe space to process these feelings.
  • Stress or academic pressure feels unmanageable: Academic success matters, but not at the cost of your mental health. If pressure feels overwhelming, seek guidance to manage stress.
  • Relationship or family issues: Personal issues, whether with family or relationships, can impact your emotional health. A counselor can help you navigate these challenges.
  • Concerns about self-harm or substance use: If you're struggling with self-harm, alcohol, or drug use, seek support immediately. You don't have to face these challenges alone.

As JCU Head Counselor Carolina Meucci advises, “Don’t be afraid to talk about it and reach out. We are all vulnerable human beings, and we need to be aware that sometimes stress, trauma, loss, or something else can trigger a change in our mental and physical well-being.”

Carolina stresses, “Sometimes the problem is adjusting to a new culture or the challenges of being on your own far from home. Some students struggle with more serious conditions like mood disorders, anxiety, and eating disorders. It’s important to be aware of these issues and not be afraid to talk about them or reach out for help because it’s okay to not be okay at times.”

The Benefits of Seeking Support When You Study Abroad

Counseling provides a safe, confidential space to explore your feelings, develop coping strategies, and gain perspective on the difficulties faced when you study abroad. Additionally, counselors are trained to respect your background, whether that relates to your race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, or nationality. Your mental health journey is unique, and the support you receive should reflect that.

The JCU Counseling Center offers comprehensive Mental Health Support when you study abroad in Italy.

Protecting your mental health isn’t just about addressing problems when they arise but recognizing when you need a helping hand.
