The need for a career in sustainability has never been more critical in response to the urgent global issues we face today. From tackling climate change to promoting social justice, sustainability touches every part of our lives, and more institutions are taking concrete steps toward environmental responsibility.
If you're passionate about making a difference, John Cabot University provides a comprehensive path to help you turn that passion into a career. With robust academic programs, dynamic student clubs, and practical learning opportunities, JCU is dedicated to equipping students with the skills and knowledge needed to become sustainability leaders.
At John Cabot University, sustainability is not just a buzzword; it’s a core part of the academic and social fabric of the university. True to its liberal arts tradition, JCU offers a multidisciplinary approach to sustainability, integrating it into various academic courses across disciplines. With this approach, our school encourages students to develop a holistic vision of sustainability, providing a broad understanding that combines scientific, social, and economic perspectives.
Courses such as Global Warming, Food and Agriculture, and Energy & Environment offer in-depth insights into environmental science. At the same time, classes like Writing for Advocacy: Climate Crisis and Public Relations teach students how to communicate effectively about sustainability issues. This integration ensures that students interested in a career in sustainability learn about sustainability from a scientific standpoint, understand its societal impact, and learn how to advocate for change effectively.
As Davide Ebraheem, JCU Alumnus and winner of the Elevator Pitch and the Triggering Change Competition, reflects, “Marketing and entrepreneurship go well together, and I decided to focus on sustainability because I am passionate about it. I think, especially at this time, it is important to talk about sustainability and convey certain values to consumers.”
JCU provides numerous opportunities for students to apply their knowledge in real-world settings, preparing them for careers in sustainability. The Certificate in Sustainability is a testament to this commitment. Open to students from any major, this certificate program combines academic coursework with experiential learning, including participation in events like the Triggering Change Pitch competition.
The Triggering Change Pitch is an innovative platform that allows students to use creative storytelling, research, and multidisciplinary perspectives to design pitches that inspire action on sustainability. With participants from around the globe, including students from Richmond University, Oxford Brookes, and the University of Arkansas’s Rome campus, this initiative provides a unique opportunity to collaborate, learn, and grow with diverse peers.
Additionally, students can engage in sustainability projects through clubs like Grassroots. Founded in 2013, Grassroots embodies a community-driven approach to environmental activism. The club organizes weekly cleanups of Rome, clothing donation drives, and educational events that bring students and faculty closer to nature and foster a sense of responsibility toward the environment. These initiatives provide practical experience in environmental management and community engagement.
At JCU, sustainability education extends beyond the classroom. The Alumni Sustainability Hub connects current students with a network of alumni who are experts in sustainability across various industries. This hub facilitates mentorship opportunities, allowing students to gain insights from professionals who have successfully turned their passion for sustainability into thriving careers.
Through events, workshops, and informal exchanges, students can engage with practitioners, gain exposure to current sustainability challenges, and learn from real-world experiences. This network is invaluable for students looking to build a career in sustainability, providing guidance, support, and potential job opportunities in the field.
