If you’re interested in archeology and architecture, there are a few on-site courses you can take at JCU that will give you some insight into the cities, houses, and monuments of the Roman Empire. “Cities, Towns & Villas: Rome, Ostia, Pompeii” is one of these courses, including trips to sites within these three locations to further explore processes of urban development and the physical and social aspects of ancient Roman cities. With visits to temples, theaters, baths, and other monuments, you’ll develop skills in historical analysis, gaining first-hand experiences in studying ancient Roman systems and culture. Rome is known for its great works of art, and if you’re looking for an on-site course that offers a deep dive into the artists that defined the Renaissance, “Early Italian Renaissance Art” is a great option. Throughout the course, you’ll visit many museums and sites of artwork within Rome, in addition to taking a trip to Florence to discover a variety of influential sculptures, paintings, and architecture. You’ll develop an awareness of the historical context in which the artwork of the Renaissance was created, in addition to building critical thinking skills surrounding art history. 

If you’re interested in the culture of the Medieval Period, “Mystics, Saints, and Sinners: Studies in Medieval Catholic Culture” is a great way to learn more about the theological foundations and medieval faith which influenced the development of many Roman institutions.
