If you choose to study abroad in Italy, it is inevitable that you will want to experience all of the amazingly rich and beautiful culture that the country has to offer. While studying at John Cabot University, it’s almost impossible not to soak up that incredible cultural vibe so as the new year begins we have collected some of the best experiences to make 2014 truly a year to remember. If you are going to study abroad, let’s hope you take advantage of as many of these great as you possibly can.
On Friday, January 17th you can embark on a tour of the center of downtown Rome, seeing things like the Spanish Steps, the Pantheon and other amazing, historic sites. Later in the spring, in March and April, our Student Services office is organizing weekend getaways to Tuscany and Campania. Join other John Cabot students and visit the gorgeous cities of Siena, Pompeii, Sorrento, Capri, and Naples!
Starting on Wednesday, January 29th and throughout February, we will be offering Italian cooking classes. What better way to learn about Italian culture than to learn how to make a scrumptious 4-course meal from scratch with an Italian chef?
From February 13th-15th2014, John Cabot University will again play host to a model UN, in an event called the JCU MUN. In the 2012 iteration of the event, students debated on the hotly contested topic of Palestinian Membership and Recognition into the United Nations. Information is forthcoming about the 2014 edition, but with so much happening in global politics right now it’s no stretch to assume that it will be an engaging occasion.
In February, Dr. Theda Skocpol – Professor of Government and Sociology at Harvard University – will give a lecture to the students and faculty of John Cabot. Awarded the Johan Skytte Prize in Political Science for her "visionary analysis of the significance of the state for revolutions, welfare, and political trust, pursued with theoretical depth and empirical evidence” in 2007, Skocpol is currently writing on the changes in US federal policies in the Obama era.
In March, John Cabot will host an event called "Women in Power in New Democracies.” The event will feature representatives from the embassies of countries including Ukraine, Estonia, Slovenia, Romania, Lithuania, Serbia and Bosnia and will be a discourse on the developing role of women in countries that are forging new democracies.
So however you choose to spend your time, get out there and try to experience all you can. The chance to study in Italy is a once in a lifetime opportunity, so you should definitely make the most of it!
