Deciding to study abroad in Rome is a huge step. It involves plunging into the unknown and preparing for all kinds of new experiences and adventures. Exploring timeless sites, seeing some of the world’s most iconic landmarks, and discovering another culture is an exciting prospect, but trying to figure out how best to pack for such an experience can feel rather daunting.

The last thing you want to do is get off the plane and realize that you forgot something important. Here are a few tips for you to keep in mind as you begin packing for your time abroad at John Cabot University.

Prioritize the Essentials

Getting ready to study abroad might feel a bit like moving to a different planet - you're going to want to bring everything with you, just in case! Don't forget, however, that Rome is a large city full of stores where you can buy non-essential items such as shampoo or umbrellas, which will just take up valuable space in your suitcase. If you’re planning on living in John Cabot University housing, you’ll also be supplied with towels and bed linens, so you don't have to worry about bringing those either. There are some things, however, that you absolutely don't want to leave at home when you're packing:

Your passport, visa, proof of health insurance, and any other required or important documents. Triple check that you have all your travel documents!
A backpack: this will come in handy during day and weekend trips.
Prescription medications, contact lenses, and any other essential medical items or supplements
A laptop or tablet
A portable charger
Adapters and power converters: adapters will allow you to plug in your electronics into the sockets, but if you're coming from the US or another non-European country, you'll also need a power converter to be able to use your devices without blowing them up.

Pack Clothing for Any Occasion

When studying in Italy, you’re going to be visiting a lot of different places, and possibly experiencing a variety of weather. You might attend a night at the opera, spend a snowy weekend in the Dolomites, or explore the beaches of the Amalfi Coast. Make sure that you have an outfit for every occasion, without bringing too much of one type of clothing. Here are some items you shouldn’t forget:

Sturdy Walking Shoes: There are lots of cobblestone streets in Rome, and you’ll spend a lot of time walking, so make sure you have something comfortable on your feet. While high heels might look cute, they’ll cause you some serious pain.
Light Layers: Bring a variety of layers, including short-sleeved tops, long sleeves, jackets, sweaters, shorts, and pants.
A swimsuit
A suit or job interview outfit, as well as a variety of professional attire: If you plan on completing an internship, you want to be ready to dress the part.
A light raincoat that you can carry with you so you're prepared in case of fickle weather

A Few Other Tips

While you’re sightseeing in Italy, you might want to write down your observations so that you can look back on them later. You’re sure to come home with many stories to tell, so carrying a journal or bullet journal with you can be a great way to document your adventure. If writing isn’t your thing, use your journal as a sketchbook and draw what you see.

It's always a good idea to pack also a few favorites from home, like printed photos of family and friends or a beloved old stuffed animal. Although the staff at John Cabot University will help you get settled, you might feel more at home with some familiar items packed in your suitcase. Just don’t pack too many sentimental items as they can take up space quickly! And don't forget that you also want to leave a bit of empty space in your suitcase for the items that you purchase while abroad.
