Honestly, I always thought studying abroad was not for me, but I took the chance and decided to apply to John Cabot University not knowing that it would impact my life as much as it did. I wanted to step out of my comfort zone, experience living in another culture, and learn how to adapt to a new environment independently. I picked JCU because of the fact that it is an American university, so felt like I had a piece of home with me in my new home: Rome.
Studying, making friends, traveling, and living in Trastevere
Every aspect of my time abroad at John Cabot exceeded any expectation I could ever imagine. I would like to start with my professor from my class in the mathematics department. Professor Stefano Arnone made the class so enjoyable, and he truly cared about seeing us understand and succeed with the material.
My 4 roommates and I became close as well as we explored around our apartment and walked to school together. The Trastevere neighborhood immediately felt like home to me, and I knew I picked the right place to study abroad. I became a regular at some gelato shops, restaurants, and coffee shops, and it was amazing to experience what it is like to be a part of the community.
I made an amazing friend group at JCU. We decided to travel to numerous countries and cities together every weekend. We went to the Amalfi Coast, Paris, Mykonos, Venice, and Florence. I got to experience many different cultures and see different cities that changed my perspective on life. Being able to navigate around another country by myself and then go back home to Trastevere is something I will cherish forever. I had no idea that Rome would feel like home to me so quickly.
What studying abroad taught me
My biggest takeaway from my study abroad experience was not only the education I received but getting to be a part of another culture and having it feel like home. Using the trams, going to local supermarkets, using another currency, and most of all seeing all of the monuments and tourist attractions that Rome is known for became the new regular for me. If you are on the fence about studying abroad at JCU, I encourage you to take the leap and do it. John Cabot University has amazing resources and support that they offer, as well as amazing professors that will guide you.
Studying abroad was one of the greatest experiences I have ever had. I am glad I pushed myself to step out of my comfort zone and do it. The memories and friends I made will last me a lifetime and I am so grateful that I had the chance to do this.
