It’s almost that time of the year - soon high school students will be graduating and heading out into the wide and wonderful world of college and university. It’s been a long journey to reach this point, but you’ve finally made it and now you’re ready to start the next stage in your life.
Except, wait, you have absolutely no idea what to expect or how to prepare!
It can be a bit daunting to be faced with the idea of moving away from home, going it on your own, and getting ready for a busy world of class schedules, meal plans and residences. However, it’s not as scary as you might think – for most it is truly a great time, especially if you know a couple of tips for getting ready!
Learn More About the College or University You’ll be Attending
One of the best things you can do to help you feel more at home when you finally move into your dorm is to spend some time before you graduate researching the college or university you’ll be attending. While it isn't always possible to visit the campus beforehand – particularly when you're going to study in Italy at John Cabot's University in Rome -with all of the information and videos available on the website you'll feel like you're virtually there already.
Meet Your Admissions Counselors
The university's Admissions Office exists to answer any question you might have about study abroad in Rome, so make the most of it! Our multicultural and multilingual staff are happy to provide you with information about majors and programs, transfer credits, student life, or scholarships and financial aid. American students interested in pursuing a degree can even Skype with admissions counselor Nadia Spagnoli on Tuesdays from 7:30 to 11am (EST).
Get Your Monetary Affairs in Order
If you’re applying for financial aid, do so sooner rather than later – the bigger the head start you have, the better the chances that you’ll receive your money before or at least in time for the move. Keep an eye on dates and deadlines, and don’t be afraid to ask for help – it’s a learning process.
Budgeting
Part of the excitement of venturing into the world on your own the first time is taking control of your finances. A little budget planning will go a long way to ensuring you have enough money for food, books and supplies, with enough left for trips and fun on the town. The university's website has some great tips on how to manage money. Getting the meal plan is a convenient way to always eat happily and healthily, with a simple card for security, expedited check-out and roll-over points.
It's totally a little nerve-wracking and exciting to be heading off to school and starting a new chapter in your life, but with the right attitude and these helpful tips, you’ll be settled in no time!
