As the weather is gradually getting warmer and the Spring semester is starting to wrap up, it's the perfect time to start thinking about summer plans.
If you are considering staying in Rome, signing up for Summer courses in either summer session I or II is a great start. By choosing to take a few classes in the summer, you will quickly see that with fewer students around and a lighter course load than during the Fall or Spring semesters, you will have even more time to explore Rome and its surrounding area. You will feel even more like a local in no time!
One of the best ways to spend free time in the summer is by checking out the local beaches around Rome. Hop on the train and go spend some time cooling off on the shores of beautiful beaches, all less than an hour from Trastevere or the center of Rome!
Here are 4 great beaches near Rome:
1.Santa Marinella
Santa Marinella is small but beautiful. Enjoy a sunny day lounging on the sand under one of the umbrellas you can rent, and cool off in the crystal clear waters. To get there all you need to do is to take the train from Trastevere station in the direction of Civitavecchia or Pisa, getting off at S. Marinella. It only takes about 1 hour, and once you get there, the beach is a 5-minute walk from the train station.
2. Santa Severa
Santa Severa is another beautiful option, and is even closer than Santa Marinella. This beach is beautifully calm and quiet, and even has a castle from the 1400s that you can explore. To get there, take the same train from Trastevere, but just get off one stop before S. Marinella. This should take less than an hour.
3. Ostia
The beach at Ostia is larger than those listed above, as it was once one of Rome's ancient ports. You can rent an umbrella for some shade, and/or stroll along the boardwalk while stopping in the cafes and restaurants. To get there, you can take the Metro B line to Piramide station. From there take the train to Ostia Lido. Be sure to get off at the Lido Centro or Cristoforo Colombo stop. From Piramide it will only take about 45 minutes!
4. Fregene
Fregene beach is just north of Ostia. Enjoy the long stretches of sand, and a wide selection of local restaurants! To get to Fregene, you should take the Metro A line to Cornelia, direction Battistini. From there you can take the local bus to Fregene. From Cornelia, you can get there in an hour or less!
