The Cupola of Saint Peter’s Basilica
Climb the dome for a breathtaking view over Saint Peter’s square. From the entrance to the roof level, there are 320 stairs. If you don’t feel like climbing all the way, you can always take the elevator to the roof. Wear comfortable shoes anyway, though - you will still need to take the stairs for the final ascent to the top of the dome (551 steps).
The Terrace of Castel Sant’Angelo
The terrace of the castle offers a 360-degree panoramic view, with an especially good look at the Vatican area: the Tiber River, the Bridge of Angels, and St. Peter’s. The view is especially charming in the evening, when the whole is city is lit up with bright orange colors.
The Orange Garden (Giardino degli Aranci)
Located on the Aventine Hill, the Orange Garden is one of the most silent and peaceful places in the historic center of Rome. The small terrace at the end of the garden gives you a beautiful view of the city toward Trastevere and the Gianicolo Hill. St Peter’s dome stands out in the skyline. By the way, just a few steps from the garden, in the Knights of Malta building, you can find a special keyhole. By looking through it, you see the territories of 3 different countries: Italy, Malta, and Vatican. How cool is that?
The Gianicolo Hill
The Gianicolo Hill is probably the most popular place among JCU students. It is super close to the Guarini Campus (15-minute walk) and the view is heavenly. It’s also known to be a good spot for a romantic kiss!
Capitoline Hill (Campidoglio)
Michelangelo designed Piazza Campidoglio to be a capitol for the “new” Rome. Unfortunately, you will not be able to see the whole city like from the Gianicolo hill, but this gorgeous square is still worth visiting! Climb the many stairs up to the Ara Coeli basilica, right next to Piazza Campidoglio, and get an almost-birds’-eye view onto the geometric design of Michelangelo’s square.
