We all know the importance of the precious Italian cuisine. Whether you've been to Italy or you've just heard about it, you know that food there is a big deal. And when you study at John Cabot University, you will have ample opportunity to learn about it and taste it for yourself.

You might be surprised to find out that Italian food and drink culture is about more than just your average pizza and pasta. While these two elements do make up a big part of the cuisine, there are more unique flavors and combinations out there to try.

While you're studying here, don't just stick with the basics. Get out there and start experimenting with your taste buds. You'll find that there's always something new to discover in the Italian culinary world.

Here are a few categories of food and drink to get creative with:

1. Pizza

You might be eager to try the classic Margherita Pizza, and you definitely should be. This Italian staple is delicious, but when you get to Rome, you will notice that a lot of places actually sell Pizza al Taglio, or square pieces of pizza sold by weight. These slices come in all different flavors, with all different toppings. Why not go a little crazy and try one with pumpkin and zucchini flowers, or potato and rosemary. These unique flavors are just as Italian as tomato and mozzarella, so go ahead and mix up your order next time.

2. Gelato

You probably have your favorite ice cream flavors, but gelato is more than just regular ice cream. Something about eating a huge scoop of the fresh frozen treat, while strolling the beautiful streets of Rome, makes this more of an experience than just a snack. Another thing that makes gelato so special is the wide variety of flavors available at all times. Next time you have a craving, don't opt for a your usual order. Try a scoop of chocolate-orange, walnut, tiramisu, or fig. The possibilities are endless!

3. Pasta

Just like with ice cream, everyone has their favorite pasta dish. And most people assume Italian pasta comes covered in just tomato or meat sauce. But when you live in Italy, you will discover that every region has its own specialities. In Rome, there are plenty of delicious pasta dishes, typical to the city and region. So next time you want to go out for dinner, why not try a typical Roman dish like Cacio e Pepe or Amatriciana. You won't regret it.

4. Coffee

The unique flavors of Italy can be found in drinks too. There's more to coffee than just espresso and cappuccino. So next time you're at your local bar, ask for a special coffee treat! Try a marocchino, an affogato, or a shakerato.
