When should you start university? For many students, the answer seems obvious: fall. The traditional fall semester is often associated with the beginning of the academic year, orientation, and a new class of students arriving on campus.

But fall is not the only time to begin your university journey. Many universities, including [John Cabot University](https://www.johncabot.edu/default.aspx) in Rome, offer students the opportunity to begin their undergraduate studies in the spring.

For many students, choosing between a spring and fall start can depend on a variety of factors, from application timing and academic plans to personal circumstances and when you want to begin your university experience.

So, which university semester is right for you?

## What Is the Difference Between a Spring and Fall University Start?

The main differenceis *when* you begin your university studies.

A fall start at an American university typically begins in late August or September and marks the beginning of the academic year. A spring start usually begins in January and allows students to join the university community partway through the academic year.

At John Cabot University, both fall and spring semesters offer students the opportunity to begin their undergraduate studies in Rome. New students participate in orientation, meet classmates, connect with university resources, and prepare for their first semester regardless of when they arrive.

The right starting point depends less on one semester being universally better than the other and more on which timeline fits your academic and personal plans. ![MPS SP26 Misc-2](https://blog.johncabot.edu/hs-fs/hubfs/MPS%20SP26%20Misc-2.jpg?width=770&height=433&name=MPS%20SP26%20Misc-2.jpg)

### Why Start Uni in the Fall?

Starting in the fall follows the traditional university calendar and may work well for students who are completing high school in the spring or who want to begin college at the start of the academic year.

A fall start can also give students more time to plan their move abroad, explore housing options, prepare for their transition to Rome, and complete the admissions and enrollment process.

For students who are ready to begin university in the traditional academic cycle, fall can provide a straightforward transition from high school to university.

🎓At JCU, Fall 2027 classes begin on August 30, with orientation taking place August 23–28. New students participate in orientation activities, placement testing, advising, and registration before beginning classes.

### Why Start Uni in the Spring?

A spring start can be a good option for students whose academic, personal, or application timeline does not align with a traditional fall start.

For example, you might consider a spring start if you:

- Graduate from high school at a different point in the year
- Want additional time before beginning university
- Are transferring from another college or university
- Are changing your academic plans
- Need more time to prepare for an international move
- Decide later in the year that you want to study abroad

Starting in January also means you do not necessarily have to wait until the following fall to begin your university experience.

🎓 At JCU, Spring 2027 classes begin January 18, following orientation from January 11–16. Orientation gives new students an opportunity to become familiar with the university, meet classmates, complete required placement testing, and prepare for the semester.

### Can You Still Get Involved If You Start in the Spring?

Yes, beginning university in January does not mean missing out on the JCU experience!

Students who join JCU in the spring can become part of the university's international community, participate in student clubs and activities, join JCU's athletic teams, explore Rome, and take advantage of academic and career resources.

JCU's campus community includes students from countries around the world, and student life extends beyond the classroom through clubs, sports, cultural activities, community engagement, and trips around Italy.

Starting in spring may look slightly different from arriving with the largest incoming class in the fall, but it still provides opportunities to meet people, become involved, and build your community in Rome.

### What About Orientation?

Orientation is an important part of starting at JCU, regardless of when you begin.

The program is designed to help new students transition to university life and to Rome. Students can learn more about campus, meet members of the JCU community, participate in activities, and receive important academic and practical information before classes begin.

For Spring 2027, JCU's orientation is scheduled for January 11–16, with classes beginning January 18.

### When Should You Apply for a Spring Start?

If you are considering starting university in the spring, it is important to pay attention to application deadlines and allow enough time for the admissions, enrollment, housing, and immigration processes.

For Spring 2027 undergraduate admission, JCU lists the following deadlines:

- **Regular Decision**: October 15, 2026
- **Late Decision I:** November 15, 2026
- **Late Decision II\***: December 15, 2026

\**Late Decision II only available to students who do not require a study visa.*

Students should be aware that more scholarship and financial aid funding may be available earlier in the application cycle, making it important to plan ahead rather than waiting for the final deadline.

Application deadlines can change from year to year, so students should always check the current [JCU admissions deadline page](https://www.johncabot.edu/admissions/undergraduate/application-deadlines) here when planning their application.

### What Should You Consider Before Choosing Your Start Date?

If you are deciding between spring and fall, consider the following questions:

1\. When will you be ready academically?

Think about when you will complete your current studies and whether you want to transition directly into university or take additional time before beginning.

2\. When do you want to move to Rome?

Moving abroad involves planning. Consider when you will be ready to arrange travel, housing, documentation, and other practical details.

3\. Do you need a student visa?

International students who require an Italian study visa should allow sufficient time for the immigration process. JCU advises non-European students to begin the visa process as soon as possible, as processing can take two months or longer.

4\. Are you transferring from another university?

If you have already completed university coursework, a spring start may provide another opportunity to continue your studies without waiting for the next fall semester. Transfer students should review [JCU's transfer admission requirements](https://www.johncabot.edu/admissions/undergraduate/transfer-students) and speak with Admissions about how previous coursework may apply toward their degree.

5\. What timing works best for your goals?

There is no single starting semester that works for every student. Think about your academic plans, personal timeline, finances, travel plans, and when you feel ready to begin university in a new country.

### Starting University in Rome

Choosing when to start university is also an opportunity to think about where you want to spend your university years.

At John Cabot University, students study in the center of Rome while pursuing an American liberal arts education. The university's urban campus places students within walking distance of historic landmarks, cultural institutions, neighborhoods, restaurants, and the everyday life of the city.

For international students, studying in Rome also means that the university experience extends beyond the classroom. Students can explore Italian culture, travel throughout Europe, and learn alongside classmates from a wide range of countries and backgrounds.

Whether you begin in the fall or spring, your university experience is about more than the date you arrive. It is about the academic community you join, the experiences you pursue, and the opportunities you create during your time abroad.
