In realtà cominciare per tempo è una componente essenziale dello scrivere un saggio eccellente, infatti non è mai troppo presto per iniziare ad informarsi cercando suggerimenti e metodi già sperimentati ed efficaci.
Perciò preparati con i nostri suggerimenti così da essere pronto ad affrontare al meglio il semestre appena iniziato!
- Inizia presto perché il panico dell’ultimo minuto provoca il blocco dello scrittore
Dal momento che i lavori di ricerca generalmente sono da consegnare a metà o alla fine del semestre, è semplice rimandare la data di inizio. Tuttavia, scegliere l’argomento del saggio è spesso complesso e richiede molte ricerche e riflessioni, perciò accumulare tutto fino a pochi giorni prima della scadenza potrebbe poi incidere negativamente sul risultato.
Scrivere un saggio è un processo. Richiede ricerche, analisi, scrittura, revisioni - e una grande dose di creatività e idee originali. Quando gli studenti fanno tutto in fretta, poi spesso sono spaventati dal gran carico di lavoro che si ritrovano, e il blocco dello scrittore fa capolino.
Inizia con varie settimane di anticipo in modo che le tue strepitose idee abbiano il tempo di prendere forma e di arricchirsi!
- Assicurati di avere una tesi forte
I migliori corsi di scrittura enfatizzano sempre quanto un buon enunciato della tesi sia fondamentale per il successo di un saggio.
La tesi, cioè l’idea centrale dell’elaborato, dovrebbe fare capire al professore la tua opinione rispetto a una determinata questione o argomento, e quale punto di vista vuoi supportare nel tuo saggio.
Gli studenti spesso scrivono la loro tesi in modo troppo vago e generico, come l’esempio che segue, dove non viene fornita alcuna argomentazione di supporto:
I mirtilli sono tra i frutti più salutari per gli uomini.
Invece, ecco qui un esempio migliore che presenta un’anteprima dell’argomento che l’autore intende sviluppare:
I mirtilli sono tra i frutti più salutari per gli uomini a causa del loro ricco profilo nutrizionale e della loro capacità di combattere malattie legate all’età.
Prova a scrivere diverse versioni del tuo enunciato di tesi per raffinare le tue idee.
- Crea una mappa concettuale – usa uno strumento visivo!
Non si ripeterà mai abbastanza l’importanza di creare uno schema della struttura argomentativa. Scrivere un saggio finale senza uno schema è come provare a trovare una strada a Roma andando in giro bendato! Perderesti moltissimo tempo e probabilmente non arriveresti mai a destinazione.
Un semplice schema riassuntivo degli argomenti in cui articolare la tesi e degli esempi che hai raccolto per supportarli, ti aiuterà a strutturare il tuo saggio con chiarezza e sicurezza.
Potresti provare a utilizzare uno strumento visivo come una mappa concettuale per creare il tuo schema, e potresti addirittura parlare delle tue idee principali con un amico. Se riesci a spiegarlo significa che sei pronto a scriverlo, e in seguito anche il tuo professore ne sarà convinto.
Non riesci invece ad articolare la tua tesi e le tue idee? Questo è un segno che ulteriore ricerca è necessaria prima che tu cominci a scrivere la tua prima bozza.
- Consulta una guida sullo stile per la citazione delle fonti e la struttura
Alcuni studenti considerano la struttura, le note a piè di pagina e la bibliografia come di minore importanza nella stesura di un saggio. In realtà, questi elementi sono fondamentali per l’integrità del tuo lavoro finale. In più, alcuni professori detraggono punti se non hai seguito correttamente la guida (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc).

All of these skills come together in the term paper, which typically accounts for a significant portion of your grade (because it’s so great at revealing what you know and pivotal in determining your knowledge and strengths as a communicator).
With the first day of school right around the corner (August 31st), this is the perfect time to start thinking about how you’ll tackle term papers this coming semester. Too early, you say?
Since advance planning is such a vital part of pulling off a successful term paper, we would suggest that it’s never too soon to start collecting tried-and-tested strategies.
So arm yourself with our top term paper writing hacks, and be prepared for whatever the fall term brings!
1. Start early because last minute panic = writer’s block
Since term papers are usually due at the middle or end of your course, it’s easy to procrastinate about getting started. However, since term paper topics are often complex and require a lot of research and mulling over of ideas, cramming them in a few days before is just asking for trouble.
Writing a great term paper is a process. It involves research, analysis, writing, revision - and a great deal of creativity and original ideas. When students try to rush things, they often feel panicked, and writer’s block rears its ugly head.

2. Make sure you have a strong thesis statement
The best writing technique classes always emphasize how important a strong thesis statement is to the overall success of a term paper.
The thesis statement should tell your professor where you stand on an issue or topic, and which supporting arguments you will discuss in your paper.
Students often make their thesis statements far too vague, like this example which fails to provide any supporting argumentation:
Blueberries are one the healthiest fruits for humans.
Here is a stronger example that offers a preview of which arguments the writer will focus on:
Blueberries are one the healthiest fruits for humans because of their rich nutritional profile and their capacity to help fight age-related diseases.
Try writing several variations of your thesis statement to really boil down and refine your ideas.
3. Map out your main ideas - try a visual tool!
We can’t stress enough the value of creating an outline of your main arguments. Trying to write a term paper without an outline is like trying to find your way around Rome blindfolded! You’ll waste plenty of time and probably never get to your destination.
A simple outline of your main supporting arguments, and the evidence you’ve gathered to back them up, will help you piece together your term paper with clarity and confidence.
You might try using a visual tool like a mindmap to create your outline, and could even talk over your main ideas with a friend. If you can explain it, you’re ready to write it - and your professor is sure to be convinced.

Can’t clearly articulate your arguments and ideas? This is a sure sign that more research is needed before you begin writing your first draft.
4. Check a style-guide for references and formatting
Some students consider formatting, footnotes and bibliography as mere after-thoughts when writing a term paper. But the truth is, these elements are critical to the integrity of your final product. Plus, some professors will deduct points if you have not correctly followed the style guide for your discipline (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc).
