Ciao a tutti! Sono uno studente di Affari internazionali alla John Cabot University. Questo è il mio secondo semestre e finora è stata un’avventura mozzafiato. E’ con entusiasmo che affermo di essere un orgoglioso “Gladiator” dato che la John Cabot offre una carriera accademica di alta qualità, in gran parte grazie al corpo docente.
Questo semestre sto seguendo il corso di American Government con la professoressa Jackie Norris, cha ha una grandissima esperienza alle spalle. Ha ricoperto diversi incarichi politici di primissimo livello. Per ultimo ha lavorato in qualità di White House Chief of Staff per Michelle Obama. Precedentemente è stata a capo della strategia del Presidente Obama per lo stato dell’Iowa nel 2008. Ancora prima, ha lavorato con Al Gore e Andrew Cuomo.
Quale migliore momento per studiare American Government che durante un anno in cui ci sono le elezioni presidenziali negli Stati Uniti? L’analisi offerta dalla Prof.ssa Norris sulle elezioni, e le previsioni di chi le vincerà, è un argomento che mi appassiona. E’ avvincente sentirle descrivere i pro e i contro di ciascun candidato!
La prof.ssa Norris è capace di descrivere la complessità di una campagna presidenziale partendo dallo scenario macro fino ai dettagli più specifici. Ci ha impresso quanto l’efficacia di un discorso presidenziale sia il risultato non solo del discorso stesso ma di un gran numero di altre variabili, come per esempio il background che viene catturato dalle riprese televisive e che serve da sfondo mentre ha luogo il discorso. Durante il discorso di Hilary Clinton del 1° febbraio, i telespettatori sono stati distratti da un bambino nel background che aveva due grandi sticker appiccicati sulla faccia. Un piccolo dettaglio di questo tipo può avere un’influenza imprevedibile e va gestito.
La prof.ssa Norris ci ha anche descritto l’importanza strategica dei media, e come possono determinare il successo o l’insuccesso di un candidato. Il tono, le parole e addirittura l’ordine delle parole di un reportage (o di una domanda, un sondaggio, ecc.) non sono mail casuali e sono invece di grande importanza.
Abbiamo iniziato il corso da appena qualche settimana, ma mi sembra di avere già imparato davvero molte cose, da come è iniziata la storia della politica americana durante il periodo coloniale ad oggi!
The U.S. Presidential Elections: Learning from an Expert
Hello, everyone! I am an International Affairs major and a degree-seeking student at John Cabot University. This is my second semester here and it has been a breathtaking adventure so far. I am proud to be a Gladiator and to be part of a University that guarantees a high-quality academic experience largely thanks to our faculty.
I am taking American Government this semester with Professor Jackie Norris. She is an extremely skilled teacher and a highly experienced professional. She has worked in many high profile political positions. Most recently, she was First Lady Michelle Obama’s White House Chief of Staff and a senior advisor on Iowa during President Obama’s 2008 campaign. Previously, she worked for Al Gore and Andrew Cuomo. I feel honored to have her as my professor since I strongly believe she has the unique experience to teach such an enthralling subject.
What better time to learn about American Government than during an election year? I especially enjoyed Professor Norris’ analysis of the upcoming U.S. presidential elections – and who will likely win them! She left me speechless as she meticulously described the pros and cons of each candidate.
She is able to present the complexity of an American presidential campaign from the macro issues down to the most specific details. For example, a presidential speech is going to be effective not only because of the speech itself but also because of the background that is captured by television cameras during the speech. During Hilary Clinton’s speech in Iowa on February 1, part of the show was stolen by a little boy in the background who had two campaign stickers on his face. Unbelievably, he actually distracted viewers from focusing on Hilary Clinton! Sometimes small details like that can have a huge impact and must be managed.
Professor Norris has also brought to life the importance of the role of the media in influencing and determining the outcome of news. How a message is framed, what words are chosen, what questions are asked, will undoubtedly have an impact.
We have had class for only over a month, and yet I seem to have understood so much about American Government, from its earliest times during the American colonial period to the 2016 Presidential Elections!
