Ciao! Sono Enrica, sono al secondo anno del mio percorso alla John Cabot in Affari internazionali. Vorrei parlarvi della mia scelta di lavorare presso gli uffici dell’Università in qualità di Student Assistant mentre studio. Questa è un’opportunità messa a disposizione dalla John Cabot per gli studenti che vogliono fare un’esperienza di lavoro e agevolazioni economiche quello che guadagnano.
È stata una grande sfida, perché conciliare lavoro e studio a tempo pieno hanno messo alla prova le mie capacità e mi hanno fatto scoprire nuovi contesti accademici e professionali. Tra i molti vantaggi, ho sicuramente migliorato le mie abilità di teamwork e problem-solving.
La mia prima esperienza ha avuto luogo dopo pochi mesi dall’inizio dei miei studi. Ho chiesto di essere presa come Computer Lab Assistant all’interno dei laboratori di computer dell’Università. Ho lavorato durante una sessione estiva ma anche durante la settimana di Orientation, il momento all’inizio di ogni semestre quando l’Università dà il benvenuto alle matricole, che provengono da ben 70 paesi. È stato emozionante poter accogliere studenti da tutto il mondo e, insieme ai miei colleghi, riuscire a rispondere alle loro domande e risolvere i loro problemi nel giro di pochissimo tempo.
Ora sono passata a lavorare in due altri uffici della John Cabot per un totale di 10 ore alla settimana. Il primo è il Development and Alumni Office, che gestisce le relazioni con gli ex alunni e la raccolta di donazioni; il secondo è l’Italian Admissions Office, che è responsabile dell’ammissione degli studenti italiani alla JCU.
Il momento più costruttivo ed emozionante è sicuramente quando si organizzano e si prende parte ad eventi importanti. Ho avuto l’opportunità di aiutare ad organizzare e di lavorare durante la riunione del Board of Trustees, e cioè il Consiglio di amministrazione della JCU. Ho anche lavorato in diverse occasioni durante le Open House, eventi mirati all’orientamento. Entrambi mi hanno consentito di relazionarmi a 360° con il pubblico
Per questo, posso dire che scegliere di lavorare e studiare allo stesso tempo è stata una delle mie più grandi sfide e soddisfazioni a livello personale. Il mio percorso di laurea mi ha fatto comprendere quanto sia importante essere coinvolti in iniziative esterne allo studio e poter imparare da ogni esperienza aggiuntiva. Anche se non è stato facile organizzare il tempo tra studio e lavoro, la determinazione nel raggiungere risultati in entrambi i contesti mi ha fatto scoprire lati del mio carattere che non credevo esistessero e mi ha motivato in ogni mia scelta futura.
Hi! My name is Enrica and I am a junior at John Cabot studying International Affairs.
I’m going to tell you about my experience working at JCU while I study. This is a great opportunity that students have as a way of gaining work experience and at the same time contributing to paying our tuition expenses.
Being a full time student and working at the same time has been a great challenge and has pushed me to think out of the box and discover new academic and professional challenges. Among the many advantages of working, I have certainly benefited in terms of my team work and problem-solving skills.
My first experience took place a few months after I enrolled at JCU. I asked to become a Student Assistant in one of the Computer labs. I worked during a summer session and also during Orientation, which is when new students arrive at John Cabot and received a week-long orientation. It was exciting to be able to welcome students from 70 countries and be able to provide solutions to their problems quickly and efficiently.
I now work in two different JCU offices for a total of 10 hours per week. The first is the Development and Alumni Office and the second is the Italian Admissions Office, which is in charge of recruiting Italian students.
The most useful and exciting moment of any work experience has been taking part in important events. It was really amazing to be able to help organize and attend the Board of Trustees Meeting, as well as helping to welcome students during the Open Houses, which are big recruiting events. Both allowed me to have direct contact with stakeholders of the university and to help manage their requests in a timely manner.
From a personal point of view, I can safely say that working while being a full time student has been one of my most rewarding experiences to date. JCU has shown me how important it is to be involved in activities that go beyond my classes, and to learn from experience. It’s not easy to find the time to work while you’re at school, but determination and hard work have helped me discover new sides of my character that I didn’t even know I had!
