Ciao! Il mio nome è Lisa e vengo da Wenzhou, in Cina. Sono al penultimo anno di studi in Economia aziendale alla John Cabot. Ho scelto questo percorso perché è abbastanza esteso da permettermi di capire meglio cosa voglio fare veramente in futuro. Benché questa ricerca sia ancora in corso, sono certa di una cosa: intendo scegliere un campo che mi appassioni. Voglio essere appassionata di quello che faccio proprio come lo sono alcuni professori della John Cabot. Il loro entusiasmo è contagioso e mi spinge a dare sempre il meglio di me.
Per esempio, quando la Professoressa Favorite, docente di Comunicazione aziendale, ci ha detto di prepararci per l’Elevator Pitch Competition ero terrorizzata. Non mi piace parlare in pubblico. Ero quasi sul punto di inviarle un’e-mail per dire che non ce l’avrei fatta. Temevo che la mia padronanza dell’inglese - di cui non sono madrelingua - non fosse sufficiente per svolgere un lavoro all’altezza del compito assegnato. Ho iniziato a posticipare e a rifiutare di affrontare il problema. Ho deciso allora di chiedere un aiuto, ma ero scettica: pensavo che nessun consiglio mi avrebbe fatto superare l’insicurezza nel Public Speaking. Eppure, quando mi sono seduta con la Professoressa Favorite, lei si è dimostrata molto entusiasta per la mia presentazione, mi ha aiutato a sviluppare idee e mi ha spinto a considerare la questione come un problema che avrei potuto superare. Abbiamo suddiviso il discorso in piccole parti e mi ha dato una mano a individuare le mie personali soluzioni.
Dopo l’incontro mi sono esercitata parecchio. Avevo ancora solo due giorni a disposizione. Ripetevo in bagno, quando andavo in giro durante il giorno, ogni volta che potevo. Più di una volta mi sono rivolta agli amici per farmi ascoltare. Il giorno dell’Elevator Pitch Competition, quando è arrivato il mio turno ero molto nervosa ma, in piedi davanti alla giuria, mi sentivo sicura perché sapevo di essermi preparata al meglio. Dopo il discorso, anche se mi ero resa conto che era andata bene, sono rimasta sorpresa quando ho saputo di essere tra i finalisti.
Un’altra Professoressa che ha saputo darmi la giusta motivazione è Silvia Ammary con il suo corso di Introduzione alla Letteratura. Inizialmente la letteratura non mi piaceva, lei però ha saputo renderla divertente. Quando spiega è sempre molto entusiasta e stimola a osservare da diversi punti di vista le storie che leggiamo. Per esempio, per me Cat in the Rain era solo il racconto di una coppia in viaggio per l’Italia. Invece c’è molto di più: la struttura, i simboli, la scelta del linguaggio… tutti aspetti ai quali non avevo pensato. The Road Not Taken di Robert Frost mi ha fatto riflettere sull’importanza delle scelte da prendere nella vita.
Sicuramente tra le tante cose che mi hanno insegnato i Professori alla JCU una tra le più importanti è proprio questa: devi essere appassionato di quello che fai.
Professors who Motivate you
Hi, my name is Lisa and I’m from Wenzhou, China. I’m in my junior year at John Cabot and I am a Business Administration major. The reason I chose Business is that it’s broad enough that it helps me develop a base to discover what I really want to do later. Although I am still trying to figure what I really want to do later, one thing is for sure: I have to choose something I am passionate about. I would like to be as passionate about whatever field I choose in the future as some JCU professors are in their own fields. Their passion is contagious and motivates me to do my best. I have found that every time I have been motivated, I have done well.
For example, when my Business Communication professor assigned us the Elevator Pitch, I was terrified. I don’t like to speak in public. And I almost sent Professor Favorite an email telling her that I could not do it. I feared that my English proficiency – English is not my mother tongue—would not allow me to do an adequate job. As a result, I kept postponing the problem and was refusing to deal with it. Then, I asked her for help and I was skeptical: I didn’t think any amount of help would really improve my feelings about public speaking. But then, when I sat down with the professor, she was very excited about my presentation and helped me to come up with ideas and made me think about the whole issue as a problem I could actually overcome. We broke up the speech into small parts and Professor Favorite helped me come up with my own solutions.
After this meeting I practiced a lot. I had two days left. I was practicing in the bathroom, when I walked around throughout the day, all the time. More than once, I grabbed a friend to listen to me rehearse. When it was my turn, I was really nervous but I stood up in front of the panel and felt confident because I knew I was well prepared. After the speech, although I felt it had gone well, I was still surprised when I found out I was among the finalists!
Another professor who has motivated me is Silvia Ammary. I took her Introduction to Literature class. At first I hated literature. But she made it fun. Whenever she talks about literature she is very excited and she made me think about the stories we were reading from different perspectives. For example, I thought Cat in the Rain was only a story about a couple travelling in Italy. But there’s a lot more to it: the setting, the symbols and the choice of language… all things I wouldn’t have thought about. The Road Not Taken by Robert Frost made me think about the importance of the choices we have to take in life.
Of the many things my JCU professors have taught me one of the most important things is: you have to be passionate about what you do.
