La ragione per la quale studio alla John Cabot è semplice: la facoltà di Comunicazione e il sogno di diventare giornalista. Le università italiane di solito non offrono questa specializzazione e non permettono di studiare a fondo il giornalismo. Ma a JCU queste materie sono disponibili. Perciò è proprio qui che posso studiare quello che mi appassiona e posso imparare da grandi professori e professionisti.
Lo scorso ottobre, quando sceglievo i corsi per il semestre attuale, sapevo che avrei voluto seguire un corso di giornalismo. Era un mio grande desiderio. Avendo già completato tutti i corsi preliminari potevo passare ad un corso più specializzato proprio riguardante l'aspetto del giornalismo che mi sta molto a cuore: il reportage delle notizie attuali.
In effetti erano tre i corsi da cui potevo scegliere: Opinion Writing, Feature Writing e Photojournalism. Il corso di Opinion Writing mi colpì subito. All'inizio esitai, perché la professoressa che insegna il corso, Judy Bachrach, è molto esigente. E così chiesi ad un'amica. Lei aveva seguito un corso con la stessa professoressa il semestre precedente e se ne era innamorata. Mi disse: "Devi assolutamente seguire quel corso: la professoressa Bachrach insegna solo durante la primavera. Non perdere questa opportunità. La prof è veramente eccezionale".
E infatti non sono stata delusa. La professoressa Bachrach, che lavora per Vanity Fair, è semplicemente fantastica. Ha un'enorme esperienza nel campo del reportage delle notizie e sa come trasmetterlo agli studenti. Posso imparare moltissimo da lei, e non vedo l'ora di assorbire tutti i suo insegnamenti.
Quello che avevo sentito dire su di lei si è rivelato essere molto vero: è estremamente esigente e si aspetta la massima puntualità e velocità. Ma dopo tutto, il gionalismo richiede anche questo.
Ogni volta che si conclude una lezione mi sento ispirata e so di avere fatto la scelta giusta. Sono sempre più convinta di diventare una giornalista.
Ogni settimana dobbiamo scrivere un articolo su un determinato argomento. Quando è pronto lo leggiamo "forte e chiaro" davanti a tutti gli studenti, che poi forniscono un feedback. Trattiamo sempre notizie del momento. La prima settimana abbiamo lavorato sul tema di Donald Trump e sul fatto che la sua campagna sia basata su commenti razzisti. La seconda settimana ci siamo dedicati al tema dell'aborto in Italia.
Adoro questa classe e non posso immaginare un professore migliore.

The reason I am here at John Cabot is that my major is Communications, and my dream is journalism. Italian universities don’t offer journalism as a major, and often do not teach journalism-related courses. JCU instead offers me this opportunity. I get to study what I love and learn from great professors.
Back in October, when I had to choose my classes for this semester, I knew I had to take a journalism class. I just had to take one. Having taken all the necessary prerequisites, I was finally ready to study something I am passionate about: news reporting.
I could choose from three classes: Opinion Writing, Feature Writing and Photojournalism. Opinion Writing grabbed my attention straight away. I hesitated at first because I heard that the Professor who was teaching the course, Judy Bacharach,is a hard grader and extremely demanding. Not sure on what to do, I asked a friend. She told me she took one of Professor Bacharach's classes last spring and loved it: "You must take that class! Judy Bachrach teaches that class only in the Spring: do NOT miss the opportunity: she is exceptional," she told me.
I was not disappointed: Professor Bachrach, an editor with Vanity Fair, is absolutely brilliant. She has incredible experience in news reporting and knows how to transmit it to the students. There is so much I can learn from her, and I am eager to "soak up" as much as possible.
The rumors I heard were also true. She is indeed very demanding, expects punctuality and promptness from us, but after all, that’s what journalism has to be.
The few lectures so far have been very interesting: every time I leave class I feel inspired and more convinced of my dream of becoming a journalist.
Every week we have to write an article on a topic. Once the piece is ready, we have to read it "loud and proud", as she often repeats, in front of the class receiving feedback from classmates. The topics we work on are current issues and events. The first week was about Donald Trump and his current presidential campaign based on racist statements. The second week was on abortion in Italy.
I am truly enjoying the class, and I couldn't wish for a better professor.
