Studying abroad in Rome offers students the chance to immerse themselves in a new culture, challenge their perspectives, and experience personal growth in ways they may have never imagined. Each semester, John Cabot University welcomes students from around the world who bring their unique stories and backgrounds to our international community.

In this post, we are excited to introduce Daryn Delescinskis, a visiting student from San Diego State University, who is spending the Fall 2025 semester studying abroad in Rome at JCU.

Originally from Denver, Colorado, Daryn is a fourth-year Psychology major with an emphasis in Neuroscience and a minor in Counseling and Social Change. In addition to her academic passion for psychology, she enjoys running, skiing, traveling, and spending time with friends and family. During her time in Rome, Daryn is also interning with the JCU Marketing Office, where she is gaining hands-on professional experience while exploring life in a new country.

Below, Daryn shares what a typical day looks like as a study abroad student at JCU, along with reflections on her transition to life in Rome.

Rome-ing Around!

As someone who thrives on routine and structure, adjusting to my new study abroad life has been both exciting and challenging. Navigating a new city, meeting new people, and managing college responsibilities can feel overwhelming at first; however I’ve learned that each day brings me closer to adapting to this new chapter. I’m excited to share a glimpse into a typical day in my life, offer tips on adjusting, and highlight some of my most memorable experiences so far!

How I Spend A Typical Day Abroad

Morning Routine
Because my days can sometimes feel hectic and nonstop, I like to start each morning with a run. Running has always been something that has helped me to clear my mind and spend some time with myself. While attending school in San Diego, I loved to go for runs near the ocean, so exploring the Tiber River has been so amazing and peaceful! After I get back home, I get myself ready for the day. This includes showering, doing my hair and makeup, and picking out my outfit. The style of dress in Rome is quite different from what I’m used to in America, but I’ve really enjoyed embracing a more formal attire.

Of course I cannot leave the house without my iced coffee. Before moving to Rome, I had never even heard of a Moka pot let alone how to use one, but I got the hang of it after a couple of tries! My favorite time of day is chatting with all my roommates in the kitchen while we make coffee and prepare for the day.

Midday Hustle
Compared to my courseload last semester, this semester has felt very manageable so far. I am a Psychology Major with an emphasis in Neuroscience, so this semester I am taking Health Psychology and Clinical Psychology. My third class is Feminist Media Studies, which is an upper division elective for my Minor in Counseling and Social Change. JCU offers for-credit internships, which has been an amazing opportunity to expand my resume, gain professional experience, and develop an international network of connections! I am currently interning with the JCU Marketing Department, working with their social media team to maximize consumer engagement.

Throughout the week, my classes are always late afternoons, which gives me plenty of time for my morning routine, but also the majority of the day to work on assignments, study for exams, or complete my internship responsibilities for the week. I’ve noticed that most of my classes have an exam based structure, where the final grade of the course is composed of exam scores. While it is nice to have minimal assignments, there is a lot of pressure to perform well on the exams. My favorite place on campus to study is the Secchia Terrace, which is located on the rooftop of the Guarini Campus. The views are beautiful and it is always so quiet and peaceful. It is the perfect place to be productive while also managing a stressful workload!

Evening Winddown
After a busy, productive day, my evening routine is my favorite part of my day. Compared to what I’m used to in the United States, dinner is much later. Adapting to unfamiliar grocery stores and learning to cook with new ingredients has definitely been a challenge, however it has provided an opportunity to expand my cooking skills. My roommates and I enjoy cooking together and trying new ingredients! Last week we made a delicious steak and spinach tortellini dish.

The evening is usually when I find time to complete chores and tidy up my room. Laundry can be slightly time consuming because most Italian households do not use drying machines, however it has helped me to plan ahead and become more organized! Having an orderly room always helps me to be productive and keep a clear head. Due to the eight-hour time difference, I typically call home in the evening, when my parents are just beginning their day. It feels strange connecting with them at a time when my day is winding down while theirs is only beginning.

The nightlife in Rome is so energetic and lively. My friends and I enjoy strolling around the city, enjoying live music and connecting with other students as well as locals. Spending my evenings out with friends gives me a chance to relax, enjoy this beautiful city, and gain amazing cultural experiences I’ll never forget.

Reflections!

This study abroad experience has been truly so amazing so far, it often feels surreal. In such a short time I’ve already learned so much about myself, developing independence and facing challenges that have fostered immense personal growth. I’ve had the opportunity to travel to incredible places and meet new friends from all over the world. As I continue to expand my experiences and face new challenges, I am so excited for the memories and valuable insights that I will gain throughout the semester!
