Club Spotlight: Grassroots

Written by John Cabot University | April 2, 2019 9:42:13 AM Z

Greetings from the Grassroots Club, a community of enthusiastic JCU students with an interest in environmentalism!

Keeping in mind our common future, we aim at creating a cross-cultural space for discussing and exploring new options, perspectives, and solutions regarding an issue that concerns us all: the state of our planet. The Grassroots Club seeks members from varying backgrounds, majors, and cultures to participate in our common purpose of protecting our wonderful planet. After all, regardless of our differences, we all walk the same earth!

No matter who you are, where you come from, or what you’re interested in, you are more than welcome to join us on our mission. We envision an environmentally friendly future for the world and our University. Some small steps have already been taken, but many more will come.

But what do we do exactly?

Our specific aim is to raise awareness within John Cabot University’s community about environmental issues. We are currently emphasizing the importance of recycling and trying to solve the issue of food waste - which inevitably concerns our university - by closely collaborating with the Tiber Café. We aspire to teach all members of the JCU community how to be a “sustainable citizen". It's not hard, and you can take your newfound environmental knowledge back home with you after your time at JCU - wherever home may be!

We organize bi-monthly club meetings, lectures, zero-waste workshops, and two clean-ups each semester. We encourage JCU students, faculty, and staff to practice conscious routines that will benefit the environment, and we provide resources that will enable you to live an eco-friendly (or eco-friendlier!) lifestyle, both on and off campus.

We conceptualize ideas and then encourage the University to adopt better policies and practices that will benefit our earth and our community at large. We also collaborate with the city of Rome and with organizations that fight problems concerning pollution, garbage disposal, and other environmental issues. And last but not least: teaming up with other John Cabot University clubs and organizations is pivotal for us, since we strive to paint a wider picture of the environment we live in, and to look at the issue from various points of view.

We believe that change doesn’t only come from large-scale actions, but from small, individual, personal steps, which each one of us can learn and  implement in our daily lives. It is actually much simpler that it sounds, and we are here to help you out! Join us on our journey: let’s dream big, and take small but steady steps.

If you want to know more, or join us, please don’t hesitate to contact us on our Grassroots Facebook page  or send us an email at grassroots@johncabot.edu
