Experiencing Public Relations Outside of the Classroom

When one thinks of the word “college” the first image that comes to mind is a desk covered in books, papers, and notes. In reality, college is the time to get out, gain practical experience, and understand how what we study in the classroom has an impact on the real world.

On October 17th, Professor Michèle Favorite's Public Relations class visited Bloomberg’s Rome offices. Bloomberg is the world’s largest financial news agency and was founded by New York’s former mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Along with Rome Bureau Chief Alessandra Migliaccio and senior investigative journalist Vernon Silver, JCU students analyzed the strategic role played by the news and the relationship between PR and news organizations. During the visit, the students and journalists discussed the impact of the news in general and were able to watch the immediate influence that the U.S. Government was having on financial markets.

“There’s nothing better than bringing students to one of the most important business news agencies to help them understand the importance of news and its impact on the markets,” says Professor Favorite enthusiastically.

This is the typical approach of a Business class at John Cabot University: discovering how the real world works by going out and exploring it.
