English for University Studies at John Cabot University

May 16, 2014

To be admitted to John Cabot University, prospective students need to take an English test to check whether their English is proficient enough to attend English-taught university courses. Nevertheless, not everyone who dreams of studying in English is or feels able to pursue an education in a language other than their native language. For these students, John Cabot University has designed ENLUS courses.

The ENLUS program is divided into two different sections, corresponding to two different levels of knowledge of the language (B1 and B2, according to the European Framework of Reference), which meet 4 days a week for either 4 hours (ENLUS I) or 4½ hours (ENLUS II). Students attending ENLUS II are also able to take one university course in Mathematics, Computer Science, and Fine Arts.

Every day, students are challenged with new activities, which aim to improve their writing, reading, listening and speaking skills. As an ENLUS student, your typical day could consist of morning grammar classes, during which professors will work with you on your weaknesses and foster your strengths to make you a better writer, preparing you for the composition classes you will take in college. After this first taste of English, you will have a long lunch break, which you will be able to spend with other ENLUS or JCU students in the Tiber Café in one of John Cabot campuses. Then, you will be able to dive into the afternoon activities, which may include tips on how to take notes – a priceless skill in college! -, summary exercises which will teach you how to write clearly and concisely, or strategies to prepare an effective oral presentation.

Moreover, ENLUS courses are a great starting point to begin familiarizing with college life, especially for those who are determined to study in a different city or country than where they were born and raised. Classes are small, which not only makes the professors able to find the time to meet everyone’s needs, but will also give you the chance to become a part of a tight international community. Although it is expensive, JCU helps its students by offering scholarships that cover up to half of the program's tuition.

So if you just graduated from high school and are planning on attending John Cabot University or another English-speaking university, or if you just want to improve your English while living in Rome, the ENLUS program awaits you!
