1. Look Back to “Renaissance Rome and Its Monuments” While at JCU

Immerse yourself in Italian history as you take a walk through the Renaissance period—or what’s left of it—in Rome. This course will whet your appetite for and appreciation of the masterpieces of the great painters, sculptors, and architects of the time, like Bramante, Raphael, and Michelangelo. “Renaissance Rome and Its Monuments” aims to make you develop a clear understanding of these works. It also helps you understand the big picture while studying at JCU, so that you know how Rome in 1420 became one of the major artistic centers of Renaissance Italy. Part of the course will give you the opportunity to visit places with amazing Renaissance significance, like the S. Maria in Aracoeli, Victor Emmanual Monument in Piazza Venezia, Piazza del Popolo, and the Villa Farnesina Frescoes in Trastevere Rione, Rome.

2. Step Into “Modern Rome and Its Monuments”

Bring your tourist personality with you as you study at our university in Rome, and you won’t be disappointed. Why? Because many of our on-site courses help you get up close and personal with beautiful landmarks, buildings, and works of art. With the course “Modern Rome and Its Monuments,” for example, you’ll get to examine the vast transformations in architecture and urban development that occurred between the 1870s and 1945. You won’t just feel like a student taking a course. You will also feel like a traveler as you walk around Rome and visit many of its historical sites and buildings. You’ll experience the grand public buildings that defined their era, like the huge Monument to Vittorio Emanuele II at Piazza Venezia and the buildings of the EUR district. This course will let you analyze how Rome experimented with social housing, and how the city was rapidly transformed after 1925.

“Cinematic Rome” is a course that gives you the opportunity to discover and analyze how the Eternal City was depicted through the camera lenses of many major moviemakers. You’ll get to study how Rome functions as a character in various movies. You’ll get to experience how artistic representations of Rome’s monuments and streetscapes came to shape cinema. You’ll also get to see how Rome’s vast history, from its ancient roots all the way to the modern era, has been represented in movies.
